1. Doing research is about finding things out that you did not know, and also creating new knowledge that no one knew before (sorry.. no gap is needed here).
2. All research has three main purposes:
a. creating new knowledge and making claims to knowledge
‘I have found out how to do this’
‘I understand this better’
‘I know this now’
b. testing the validity of knowledge claims
‘Why should I believe you?’
'Show me that what you are saying is true.’
c. generating new theory
‘I can explain (explanation is ‘theory’) what I know and how I have come to know it.’
‘I have a theory about what I know and how I have come to know’
3. Action research is about finding ways to improve your practice, so it is about creating knowledge. The knowledge you create is 'knowledge of practice'.
4. Action research is about two things: action (what you do) and research (how you learn about and explain what you do).
5. The action aspect of action research is about improving practice. The research aspect is about creating knowledge about practice. The knowledge created is your knowledge of your practice
6. There are two essential aims of all action research to IMPROVE and INVOLVE :
- the improvement of a practice
- the improvement of the understanding of the practice
- the improvement of the situation where the practice takes place
7. The aims and purposes of action research are about improving learning for improving practice, which are different from the aims and purposes of traditional forms of research especially educational research.
8. Educational research VS AR
- Educational research addresses issues that can be applied in a wide variety of educational set
- Educational research require that researchers be very selective about choosing participants, while teachers are primarily interested in researching the students assigned to them.
- Educational researchers maintain careful control over what data is collected and when it is collected, while teachers must usually rely on data sources that are commonly available in schools
9. Action research is simply a form of self-reflective inquiry undertaken by participants in social situations [teachers] in order to improve the rationality and justice of their own practices.
10. Action research can be described generally in four steps (PCAR):
a. Plan
b. Collect data
c. Analyze
d. Reflect
To be continued....
OT - in action !
