Artikel yg di terbitkan oleh The Star. Sedikit respon dan tambahan.
1. If you are planning to do your doctoral studies just for the “Dr” title - don’t.
Title “Dr” adalah antara motivation terkuat utk mendapatkan PhD. Sapa boleh nafikan? Bezanya, tidak ada byk makna title tersebut jika berhenti membuat penyelidikan selepas mendapat title “Dr”.
Tanpa title "Dr", saya percaya... (wpun tak ada statistik) maybe ramai pensyarah di IPTA / IPTS tak kisahpun nak ambil doctorate degree...
2. If you want your supervisor to suggest the topic for your research - you are not ready for it. It has to be your thesis not your supervisor’s thesis.
Dalam dunia yang multitasks, multidisciplinary, collaborative, networking,
lot of research grants…. byk kajian boleh dijalankan dgn idea yang “sepakat”.
Tidak boleh buat tesis yang hanya SV atau calon sahaja yang ada kepakaran. Sebab itu calon diberikan SV dalam bidang yang more or less the same… dalam fakulti yang sesuai …. TESL tidak boleh berada dalam Department of Chemisty atau sebaliknya. Dgn pengalaman, SV masih boleh cadangkan topik yang lebih tip top dan relevan…
3. If you are thinking how quickly you can finish it before you start, you need to think again about your commitment to your studies.
Dunia penuh sekarang penuh dgn research tools…. maybe macam CSI. Kalau dulu nak analisis chemical spectrum dalam lab makan berbulan2, preparation thin layer chromatography (TLC) lagi…. nak extract pula berminggu… kena calibrate bagai….(saya pernah tidor dalam lab !!).
Kini dah ada computerised high pressure liquid chromatography dan tools lain yang canggih…. Semuanya berlaku dalam beberapa jam sahaja. Dan ini tidak terkecuali dalam social science…terdapat byk software yang boleh membantu accelerate your journay....spt MENDELEY, ATLAS.ti...
4. If you think you can farm out to others to do your literature review, research work and statistical analysis, there will be neither pride nor sense of accomplishment in completing your work. No matter what, those who did your work will know your true worth. And others will hear of it.
Ini boleh sahaja berlaku dalam dunia research. Dalam collaboration research terutamanya yg dilakukan oleh sekumpulan pensyarah…. theory dan analisis data dalam team research tersebut mungkin dilakukan oleh researcher yg berbeza… but the findings are theirs.
Dalam membuat Phd pula... ada pengecualiaan spt dalam sains.. terdapat kajian yang melibatkan contohnya “radioactive”…. Calon hanya hantar sample (katakan ke MINT) dan hanya tunggu dapatan utk buat interpretasi data sahaja.
Namun nature research doctorate mestilah sepenuhnya kajian boleh dilakukan sendiri oleh calon (kecuali dalam sesetengah kajian sains)… maka menjadi tjawab supervisor juga memastikan calon menjalankan kajiannya sendiri.
5. If your choice of university is one that you think will easily pass you, you have no belief in yourself. You are not worthy of the title.
Saya berpendapat… isu plagiarism (termasuk di university ternama) adalah isu yang lebih serious.
6. If you are ready to see yourself as a learner, a researcher, one who wants to deepen your knowledge and honestly contribute to your field, then take up your doctoral study.
Agreed !
7. There seems to be target set on now any PhD holders we want in Malaysia by a certain date. Let’s not go down the numbers track in this race. Let’s settle for the quality of the doctoral thesis and not the sheer meaningless quantity.
Bila IPTA bertambah, IPTS wujud disana sini…. Tentulah quantity calon PhD akan bertambah…. so we also need quality supervisors too…
